Criminal Investigation Bureau

The Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB) investigates violent crimes, drug offenses, and other major criminal activities throughout Maryland. Collaborating with local, state, and federal law enforcement, the CIB provides cross-jurisdictional resources and specialized teams to support local police and disrupt organized and violent crime.

The CIB works to reduce and prevent violent crimes and is comprised of three divisions:

Criminal Enforcement Division

The Criminal Enforcement Division  (CED) is part of the Maryland Department of State Police (MDSP) that handles crime investigations including:

  • Violent crimes and homicides
  • Gangs and illegal firearms
  • Computer crimes and missing children
  • Insurance fraud and vehicle theft
  • Environmental crimes and fugitive cases

Specialized units

CED

This unit conducts statewide financial investigations for all MDSP barracks and MDSP units that involve asset seizures (currency, real estate, vehicles and real property) arising out of violations of Maryland’s drug and gambling laws.​​​​​​​
