The Maryland Department of State Police (MDSP) are actively seeking active military, veterans, and members of The National Guard for State Trooper positions. Applicants with honorable military service will be given veterans preference. As part of Maryland's continuing commitment to our veterans, we are working to connect veterans with available services and programs.
In addition to the Maryland State Police Trooper Benefit package, Military Veterans may also qualify for extra Retirement credit.
Note: This does not apply if you are already retired from the military.
If you have questions regarding processing as a State Trooper with prior military service or if you would like your contact information to be shared with the Maryland Department of Veterans Affairs (MDVA) and other State agencies please contact, Cpl. Brook Schafer, our military recruiter for MSP.

The Maryland State Police offers eligible military personnel, veterans, and their dependents the ability to utilize their GI Bill® Educational Benefits. The GI Bill® can be utilized throughout the Maryland State Police Academy, field training, and through the 16 month probationary period to follow. Military personnel are encouraged to visit the Veterans' Benefit Administration for further information.
Each Maryland State Government Department and Agency designates a Veterans Services Specialist (VSS), or 'liaison,' to offer general veteran-related information. This resource is available to State employees who have served in the military or have military family members.
The Maryland State Police also has a Military Liaison, whose primary role is to support deploying members of the MSP family serving in the National Guard and Reserves. This liaison additionally serves as the main point of contact between the Maryland State Police and the United States Military for various MDSP/Military missions.
The Maryland Department of Veterans and Military Families Communications (DVMH) - PDF Outreach and Advocacy Program collaborates with these liaisons to enhance information sharing and improve the coordination of veteran services.
