The Maryland State Fire Prevention Commission is a nine-member body established in 1964 within the Maryland Department of State Police. Its primary mission is to safeguard life and property from fire and explosion hazards through regulation and oversight.
The Board is made up of 9 members that are appointed by the Secretary of State Police with the Governor's approval. Members serve 5 year terms, with a maximum of 2 terms allowed.
Key Responsibilities
- Regulatory Authority: The Commission promulgates, amends, and repeals regulations that form the State Fire Prevention Code - PDF.
- Appeals Board: The Commission hears appeals from individuals or entities aggrieved by decisions made by the State Fire Marshal or their designees during code enforcement.
- Public Education: It is mandated to hold annual seminars and conferences to update the public and fire service personnel on new safety techniques and code changes
