The Office of the Superintendent leads the Maryland Department of State Police and oversees statewide operations and divisions.
All of the subdivisions of the Department fall under the Office of the Superintendent and are part of one of the four bureaus. Below you will find the responsibilities of each bureau:
FIELD OPERATIONS BUREAU (FOB)
Responsible for 23 barracks across the state which provide law enforcement services. The FOB bureau is divided into the Northern and Southern Commands. Approximately 75 percent of MSP sworn personnel are assigned to this bureau. FOB also Includes Special Operations & the Transportation Safety Command.
CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION BUREAU (CIB)
Provides investigative services, both overt and covert, to support the Department's mission of achieving public safety by improving the quality of life for the citizens of Maryland. CIB includes a variety of specialized units to include the Forensic Sciences Division, Computer Crimes Section, Maryland Center for Missing and Unidentified Persons, Statewide Apprehension Team, Gun Enforcement Unit, Licensing Division and the Homicide Unit.
SUPPORT SERVICES BUREAU (SSB)
Performs vital services to support the personnel and operations of the Maryland State Police. The SSB is divided into the Aviation Command, Personnel Command, Logistics Command, and Technology & Information Management Command.
HOMELAND SECURITY AND INTELLIGENCE BUREAU (HSIB)
Proactively addresses emerging security challenges through timely intelligence and information sharing, coordinated operations and strong partnerships with federal, state and local law enforcement partners. HSIB is divided into the Criminal Intelligence Division and the Security Support Division.

This section investigates and prosecutes crimes involving public corruption, official misconduct, and election law violations, as well as other specified crimes like bribery and extortion related to public officials and sworn officers.

Internal Affairs is dedicated to ensuring that all allegations and complaints of employee misconduct are investigated thoroughly and objectively. This process is essential for determining and implementing appropriate defensive or disciplinary actions.

The Statewide Interoperability Office ensures that emergency response providers and relevant government officials can communicate as needed and authorized across different jurisdictions, disciplines, and levels of government. Effective and timely communication among public safety responders, and between these agencies and citizens, is crucial for saving lives in many situations.

The Maryland Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) is responsible for protecting life and property from fire and explosion through investigations, fire code enforcement, and public education. This includes investigating the cause and origin of fires, inspecting buildings to ensure compliance with the State Fire Prevention Code, and providing public fire safety education.
