Quick tips

  • Schedule a salvage inspection on the Salvage Inspection website.

  • The  inspection fee is $75

  • Your vehicle must be roadworthy

If your vehicle has been declared salvage (totaled) in Maryland or in another state, it must pass an inspection before you can get a Maryland title or registration.

Before you get an inspection

Schedule your inspection only after confirming it is required.

  • Your vehicle must be fully repaired and must be roadworthy.
  • You must have a salvage certificate in your name.
  • If you have received an MVA form VR-310 stating your vehicle needs to pass a safety inspection within 90 days, you do not need a salvage inspection.
  • If your vehicle has already had a salvage inspection in another state, you may not need to have the vehicle inspected again in Maryland.
  • If you’re not sure if your vehicle needs inspection, email msp.ased,[email protected].

Note: Any vehicle, including tow vehicles, found to be leaking environmentally unsafe liquids on salvage location parking lots or garage floors must be completely removed. If your salvage vehicle is leaking, the salvage inspection will not be conducted and  you may also be subject to a fine.

Schedule an inspection

  1. Visit the Salvage Inspection website.
  2. Create an account, providing your name, address, contact information, driver's license number, and email address.
  3. Select your preferred inspection location, date, and time.
  4. Enter your vehicle's details: year, make, model, VIN, and salvage certificate information.
  5. Pay the $75 inspection fee using a credit card.
  6. Print or save your confirmation email and bring it with you to the inspection.

Schedule an inspection

What you need to bring

  • Valid ID
  • Salvage certificate (MVA Form VR-108 or similar)
  • The vehicle being inspected
  • Appointment confirmation email
  • Proof of ownership (bill of sale, dealer reassignment)
  • Repair receipts
  • If you’re representing a dealer, bring proof you’re an authorized dealer
  • If you’re not the owner, bring a signed authorization letter from the owner

During the Inspection

  • An MSP certified Salvage Inspector will check your vehicle’s identification numbers (VIN) and verify that no stolen parts were used.
  • If the VIN plate is missing or damaged the vehicle must be inspected by the Auto Theft Unit at the Glen Burnie site on Tuesdays from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
  • If your vehicle passes, the inspector will emboss and sign your salvage certificate
  • You can then apply to the MVA for a title and a 30 day temporary registration to get a regular safety inspection.

After Inspection

  • Pass: The inspector will give you a vehicle safety report. You can then apply for a temporary title and registration at the MVA.
  • Fail: You'll receive information on why the vehicle failed, and you'll need to make the repairs before re-applying for inspection.
