Trooper 7 was established in July 1987 as the Maryland State Police Aviation Command’s Southern Maryland section. It was first based at Patuxent Naval Air Station in Lexington Park, where crews operated the Bell 206B on extended daily schedules.
In 1992, the section moved to St. Mary’s Airport. Over time, it upgraded its aircraft from the Bell Jet Ranger to the Dauphin, and later to the AW-139 in 2014.
The Southern Maryland section handles rescues over land and water, including hoist operations from cruise ships in the Chesapeake Bay. Recently Trooper 7 had the highest call volume in the MSPAC.
