Cumberland Section | Trooper 5

Trooper 5 provides helicopter service across western Maryland, including Garrett, Allegany, and Washington counties. It also responds to calls in parts of West Virginia and southwestern Pennsylvania.

The section is based at Greater Cumberland Regional Airport in Wiley Ford, West Virginia, making it the only Maryland State Police unit permanently located outside the state.

Trooper 5 operates in some of the most mountainous and rural areas in the region. Crews often face rugged terrain and quickly changing weather, which can make missions more difficult. Flight paramedics frequently work in remote locations and are sometimes the only advanced life support providers on scene.

Because of the distance between incident locations and hospitals, Trooper 5 often completes longer flights than other sections.
