The Maryland State Police Aviation Command hires experienced helicopter pilots to support lifesaving missions across Maryland. Pilots provide airborne medical transport, law enforcement support, and search and rescue services 24 hours a day as part of a highly trained public safety aviation team.
To be considered for this role, applicants must meet the following FAA certification and flight experience requirements.
Requirements
FAA Certifications Required
All pilot applicants must have the following certifications:
- Commercial Helicopter Pilot Certificate
- Instrument Helicopter Rating
- First- or Second-Class FAA Medical Certificate
Flight Experience Requirements
- Pilot in Command (PIC): Minimum of 2,000 helicopter flight hours
- Second in Command (SIC): Minimum of 1,200 helicopter flight hours

Career Growth
Pilots may advance through the following ranks:
- MSP Pilot II – Pilot in Command
- MSP Pilot III
- MSP Pilot IV
- Instructor Pilot
- Chief Pilot
Non-competitive promotions and salary increases are available:
- Promotion to MSP Pilot III after three years as a Pilot II
- Promotion to MSP Pilot IV after three years as a Pilot III
The top base salary for MSP Pilot IV is $111,778, with annual salary increases contingent on funding.

- 2% per year at age 50 or after 25 years of service
- Maximum retirement benefit of 60%

- 12-hour shifts and flexible schedules
- Opportunity to be assigned to one of seven Maryland State Police Aviation Command bases statewide
