The Aviation Maintenance Technician performs maintenance and repairs on turbine-powered helicopters used by the Maryland Department of State Police (MDSP) Aviation Command.

Technicians maintain aircraft according to Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations and manufacturer specifications. Work may take place at the maintenance facility or in the field.

Key Responsibilities

Typical duties may include:

  • Perform daily aircraft inspections and preventive maintenance
  • Conduct major inspections (typically every 100 flight hours)
  • Replace aircraft components during overhaul (typically every 1,200 hours)
  • Install and service aircraft engines
  • Rig and adjust flight control systems
  • Perform emergency repairs in the field when needed
  • Maintain maintenance schedules and records
  • Clean and maintain aircraft and aviation equipment
  • Maintain tools and ground support equipment
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Candidates should be able to:

  • Diagnose and repair issues with turbine-powered aircraft
  • Maintain required maintenance records and documentation
  • Understand and follow written and verbal instructions
  • Work effectively with other team members

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Two years of experience maintaining turbine-powered aircraft
  • Or, graduation from a FAA Part 147 Aviation Maintenance Technician School

Applicants must provide proof of education, such as:

  • Transcript (student or official copy)
  • Foreign degree evaluation (if education was completed outside the United States)

Applications without proof of education may not be considered.

Required Licenses

Employees must have:

  • FAA Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) Mechanic License
  • Valid driver’s license (employees may need to operate state vehicles)

Special Requirements

Before appointment, candidates must successfully complete:

  • Drug screening
  • Criminal background investigation
  • Polygraph examination conducted by the Maryland State Police

Additional requirements include:

  • Participation in substance abuse testing in accordance with COMAR 06.01.09
  • Ability to work weekends and some holidays
  • Availability for 24-hour call-in when needed
  • Employees are part of a covered bargaining unit and must pay a bi-weekly service fee

Selection Process

Only applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be considered.

Qualified candidates will be placed on an eligible list and categorized as:

  • Best Qualified
  • Better Qualified
  • Qualified

This list may be used by the hiring agency for up to one year.

Pay, Promotions, and Benefits

Salary: $46,857 – $75,012 (Grade 17)
Starting salary is based on experience. The typical starting salary is about $60,815.

Employees may advance to higher positions, including:

  • Lead Technician (Grade 18)
  • Expeditor (Grade 18)
  • Technician Supervisor (Grade 19)
  • Chief Technician (Grade 20)
  • Aviation Manager (Grade 21)

Higher grades include approximately 6% salary increases between levels.
