Description

The Salisbury section is the fourth helicopter section in the Maryland State Police Aviation Command. It began operating on weekends in the summer of 1977 from the Berlin Barrack. In 1978, the section moved to Salisbury–Wicomico Airport, and by January 1979, it became a full-time, 24-hour operation.

In 1990, the state purchased a 10,000-square-foot hangar at the airport, which remains Trooper 4’s home today. Over the years, the section has used several aircraft, including the Bell Jet Ranger and Bell UH-1B, before transitioning to the twin-engine Eurocopter Dauphin helicopter.

Trooper 4 primarily serves the four lower counties on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. It also provides backup coverage to the upper Eastern Shore and supports missions in lower Delaware and Virginia’s Eastern Shore.
